May, 2018
Dear Parents,
It doesn’t seem possible that we have begun our final quarter of grade five. This year has really gone by so quickly! Testing will be a large part of this month’s activities, but we still have curriculum to finish before the end of the year. We will be working until the last bell!
Two sessions for both math and science/technology are our scheduled MCAS tests beginning next week. Those tests will be followed by district testing using MAP and BAS as final assessments. Units covered in class will also be assessed for final grades. In spite of the season, we have to keep our focus until the end of the year.
We will continue with our silent reading and read-aloud. Student response logs and journals should reflect the comprehension strategies we have been studying this year. Responses should be thoughtful and should showcase an understanding of the material. Of course proper grammar and spelling are important to the writing process. Guided reading groups will finish the year with a final paper about the book they have completed.
Our last book report will be an author study. Students will read books by Patricia Polacco and develop a report about the main themes of her writing. Books and graphic organizers for this project will be provided in class.
We are currently working on division of fractions and converting units within the two systems of measurement. There are still students who have not completed the drills and skill tests for Xtramath. By this time in grade five accuracy and fluency in the basic operations is a must. Please have your child work on Xtramath once a day until they bring home the certificate for division. Let’s go off to grade six prepared!!!
Our next domain in science will be life science. We will be studying how plants and animals obtain food and energy. We will combine our design/engineering and science skills to create a composter.
From the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence, we will work our way through the early stages of our government to the Constitution and the first three presidencies. The story of Lewis and Clark and then the War of 1812 will lead us to the 1830s. Once there we will prepare for both of our June field trips.
Thank you for continuing to check agendas for grades and assignments.
Tissues and hand sanitizer are always on our wish lists!
Sincerely,
Mr. Tucker & Mrs. McSweeney
